The Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee:

Shining the Light on Eating Disorders Awareness

(Nashville, TN)  As part of National Eating Disorders Awareness week (February 25-March 3, 2007), the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee will present an informative and fascinating evening program to treatment professionals and the community which delves into the life of the a-typical face of eating disorders:  a male with binge eating disorder.

Ron Saxen, author of The Good Eater (Newharbinger, 2007) talks about his own struggle with an eating disorder, Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 7 pm-9 pm at the Axel Swang Auditorium, Lipscomb University, in Nashville, TN.  A coffee and dessert reception will accompany a book signing with Ron Saxen.

From The Good Eater:..

When we hear the words "eating disorder" we think of spindly adolescent girls, but in America one million male anorexics and bulimics, and three million binge eaters are hiding their disease. At least one in ten of those with a full blown disorder will die of it. In The Good Eater Saxen reveals exactly what goes on in his head at that turning-point moment when inhaling several pounds of food starts to sound like a good idea.

The Good Eater: The True Story of One Man's Struggle with Binge Eating Disorder is the first darkly humorous look at binge eating disorder (BED) from a male point of view. The book puts us inside Saxen's sharp, funny mind as he copes with the fallout from an explosive childhood by adopting the candy isle at the local convenience store as his surrogate family.

The evening will also showcase a panel of eating disorder treatment professionals including, a psychologist, an MD, a nutritionist, and a marriage and family therapist who can answer questions from the audience.

The Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee is a resource for individuals, families, and communities on eating disorders, with the hope that education will prevent the development of eating disorders and provide those who are impacted by disordered eating with support, information, and assistance in finding effective treatment.  For more information and to contact the EDCT, visit www.edct.net or call 615.831.9838.
