Nashville— Feb. 10, 2006 — For Immediate Release — Nashville is one of a handful of markets nationwide that schedule a week-long series of events annually for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. The Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee will reach out to schools and communities statewide between February 26 – March 4, with events that aim to promote a healthy body image and prevent disordered eating.

Local activities include …

"Get Comfortable in Your Genes" and wear jeans that fit your genes!  Take part in our Great Jeans Giveaway by either bringing a pair of your wrong-sized jeans to the Frothy Monkey and receive 20% off your meal and drinks! Also, enjoy a live performance from Chicks with Pics, grab a "Great Jeans Java" and hear about the week's events!

Sponsored by:  Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee, National Eating Disorders Association, Kroger, Wild Oats, YMCA, YWCA, and the Frothy Monkey

GREAT JEANS GIVEAWAY

Because body shape and size are largely determined by genetics, and fighting your natural size and shape can lead to unhealthy dieting practices, poor body image and decreased self esteem, the EDCT encourages us all to be comfortable in our clothes and wear jeans that fit our genes! So, donate a pair of too-small or wrong-sized jeans at participating Kroger, Wild Oats, and YMCAs during the week of February 26-March 4, 2006. All jeans donated to YWCA women’s charities. For a complete list of donation sites visit www.edct.net

DIALOGUE AND DENIM: GETTING REAL WTH YOUR GENES/JEANS

The EDCT will present Dialogue and Denim: Getting Real with Your Genes/Jeans at four Nashville area universities (Vanderbilt, MTSU, Belmont, and Lipscomb).  We will explore how body size and shape are strongly influenced by biological factors and also call attention to the new discoveries surrounding the role of genetics in the development of eating disorders.

The evening will include a little jeans therapy. Part fashion. Part lecture. All real. Sponsored by Bamboo and Flaunt boutiques. Come and see a variety of jean styles to complement a variety of gene styles. Visit www.edct.net for locations and times.

Nationwide …

National Eating Disorder Association ambassadors Paula Abdul (American Idol); Jamie-Lynn Sigler (The Sopranos); Scarlett Pomers (Reba); actress Tracey Gold; model and producer Carré Otis; and author, lecturer and actionist Jessica Weiner – who have all overcome eating disorders themselves – are using their spotlight to reach out to anyone who may be struggling with anorexia, bulimia and other disordered eating. Also reaching out as an ambassador on behalf of NEDA is model, TV host, author, lecturer and plus-sized clothing designer Emme, who has long promoted healthy body image.

Despite busy TV production schedules, these celebrated women are supporting NEDA fundraisers, speaking at high schools and on college campuses and conducting national media interviews to raise awareness about eating disorders.

"Our NEDA ambassadors are all amazing and impressive women," commented Lynn Grefe, CEO of NEDA. "Not only because of their obvious talent, but because of their unselfish commitment of time and their willingness to share their personal stories with the world in order to help others battling this deadly disease. Their message is that there is hope … and there is help."

The Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee is a resource for individuals, families, and communities on eating disorders, with the hope that education will prevent the development of eating disorders and provide those who are impacted by disordered eating with support, information, and assistance in finding effective treatment.
